Spring Zing Jewelry Contest 2008 - Entries Page 9

Entry 041 - Neal Moody

“Subtleties” is the appropriate name for this piece. It started as a fascination with patinas and their effect on metals. The only pre-fabricated part is the etched sheet on the front of the pendant. Each large ring is made from 2 sizes and types of wire (14ga brass and 12ga sterling, 14ga copper and 12ga sterling). Each ring was soldered, roller milled for even thickness, and hammered. The pendant was hand fabricated from sterling etched sheet for the front onto a midsection of 18 gauge sheet stock. A roller milled mixed sheet of and copper/silver is on the back. The small ring pairs are simple – one sterling and one brass, each soldered closed for stability. The clasp is one large hammered ring and toggle clasp.

Straight Shooter ~ This piece is made using an original piece of art I collaged using a beautiful Mexican Calendar Girl and vintage sheet music. I soldered the pendant with silver solder, which I oxidized to match the vintage found pieces. Yellow agate roundels were chained together, with a sprinkle of faceted carnelian, vintage turquoise, and a couple of 10 mm dark smokey grey faceted Czech fire polished crystal beads. The vintage key is made of steel. I used vintage silver and steel, oxidized sterling silver, dark annealed steel wire, and base metal.

This necklace is a sampler of metal and wirework techniques. I used sterling silver, copper, nickle and brass. All the pieces were cut, formed, hammered, stamped, riveted or etched. I wire wrapped all the pieces using sterling wire and gave them a patina with liver of sulfer.

I call my piece "Charmed I'm Sure". (Yes, I'm from the South and could not help myself.) The necklace chain I made out of hammered fine silver jump rings half of which have been fused together. The other half I decided to leave open to add an old world look to the piece. I balled up different gages of fine silver wire and added gold vermeil beads and rings (bought) and made little barbel dangles and arches with my torch. The center piece is fine silver fused together and is completed made by hand. It is accented with gold filled double wire wrapped blue topaz gemstones. The necklace is finished with a small fine silver swawn clasp.
