Charlie Warner - Lampwork

"My name is Shirley Warner. Everyone calls me by my nickname - Charlie. I took my first lampworking class in December 2001 and immediately fell in love with the art of making glass beads. I knew this was something that I wanted to learn as much about as I could. There is something magical about melting a glass rod to make a bead. I like the organic look and am always experimenting with metal leafs, enamels and frit combinations. It sure is fun opening the kiln the next day to see what will come out!

Whenever I have the opportunity, I study with lampworkers that are well known in the “bead world”. I am very thankful to them for sharing their knowledge of this wonderful medium. The new techniques I learn in these classes keep me stretching and growing as a lampworker."

Wendy Leys - Lampwork

I do not remember a time when I was not fascinated with glass. my first piece of lampwork was a ten cent dog that I bought at the San Diego Zoo souvenir shop. I still have it and other pieces that I have collected over the decades. Years later as an art major in college I worked in many different mediums. The hot glass shop had a huge pull on me even then.

In 1997 I was fortunate to discover the world of handmade glass beads. They have held me in their enchantment since then. These small objects incorporate the elements of design that I love. They have color, line, form, dimension, light and a tactile quality that makes them irresistible to many. In the past ten years my desire to work at the torch as grown with each new technique I learn. I now share my wonderful studio with my daughter Brooke, the next generation of glass artist.

I thank the generous teachers with whom I have taken classes and the California bead community for keeping me growing as an artist. I am grateful to Connie Fox for introducing me and other bead makers to a style of jewelry that can incorporate our beads. I think she makes metal magic. I am honored to have her include my beads.
